Achilles Heel Pain

The Achilles tendon is a thick cord that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It is the strongest tendon in the body, and is important for physical activities such as running, climbing stairs, jumping, and standing on your toes.

What is the Achilles Heel?

The achilles heel is the large tendon raises your heel when you walk and helps to push up the toes. When damaged, the ankle cannot move or enable you to walk or run.

Problems with the tendon often lead to Achilles heel pain. These Achilles tendon problems include:

    • Achilles tendinosis, which refers to very small tears in the tissue surrounding the tendon. This problem is caused by repeated movements or overuse. Achilles heel pain is usually the result of tendinosis, which is characterized as a mild, aching heel pain that may occur gradually whenever you walk or try to run. Other symptoms include reduced strength and limited range of movement in the ankle.
    • Achilles tendonitis, which refers to inflammation of the tendon, accompanied by back of the leg heel pain. Heel pain may be mild at first, but becomes more severe after prolonged running, sprinting, or climbing stairs.
    • An Achilles tendon tear occurs when the tissue is partially torn from ove Heel and leg pain may be mild or absent. Although it would seem that this injury happened suddenly, it is possible that it is a result of repeated movements or overuse of the tendon.
    • Achilles tendon rupture causes sudden heel pain that is followed by inability to walk. You will feel a sharp heel pain that may be preceded by a popping sound. There is heel swelling, pain, and bruising. Poor muscle conditioning, overexertion, rapid exercise and advancing age contribute to Achilles tendon rupture.

Injuries to the Achilles tendon usually take time to heal because there are very few blood vessels around this area. Achilles heel pain treatment includes rest, the use of over-the-counter pain medications, and Achilles heel pain exercises. Early treatment is important, especially if the injury is severe. This may involve surgery and limiting foot and ankle movements using a cast or brace. However, for mild cases, chiropractic treatment may be effective in curing heel pain. They are specialists in aligning the small bones and relieving stress responsible for the pain in the first place.  Be sure to consult a chiropractor for immediate relief of heel pain.
