Ankle Pain Treatment
Ankle pain is a common foot problem, but the incidence is unknown. Aside from pain, you may also experience redness, warmth, swelling around the ankle, and limited mobility.
What Causes Ankle Pain?
Acute ankle pain is most often due to a sprain, which involves an injury to the ligaments around the bones of the ankle. Twisting of the joint causes a tear in the ligaments, which may lead to sudden ankle pain, swelling and bruising. Other ankle pain causes include bone fracture and injury to the tendons, leading to tendinitis or tendonitis.
Chronic ankle pain, on the other hand, usually results from long-term inflammation of the joint, caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. Unexplained ankle pain may be due to nerve compression, which leads to a condition called tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Ankle Pain Treatment
Treatment options for severe ankle pain include RICE therapy, pain relievers, and chiropractic treatment. Resting, ice application, compression, and elevation of the ankle usually relieve ankle pain. For persistent ankle pain, treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation. Chiropractic manipulation has also been found to be useful for chronic ankle pain treatment.
