Heel Pain

The heel is the back portion of the foot behind the arch and below the ankle. It consists of the large heel bone called the calcaneus, where the Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the foot.

What is Heel Pain?

The plantar fascia, which is a tough tissue found at the bottom of the foot, also attaches to the heel and runs along the length of the foot to the area below the toes. A foot pad covers the heel and protects it from impact during standing, walking, and running.

What is heel pain? Anything that affects the structures in the heel can cause heel pain. Some of the common causes of acute heel pain include:

  • blisters and corn due to prolonged walking and running
  • a stone bruise, which is an injury caused by stepping on a rock or other hard object.
  • Inflammation of the Achilles tendon (Achilles tendonitis)
  • inflammation of the plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis)
  • stress fracture on the heel bone

Risk factors for developing heel swelling and pain include repeated or prolonged walking and running, wearing tight or worn out shoes, having a flat feet or high arches, and certain activities that result in trauma or injury. Repeated trauma to the heel can lead to the formation of abnormal bone growths (heel spurs), which causes chronic heel pain. Ankle and heel pain are usually associated with tightness of the Achilles tendon due to shortening of the calf muscles. This is also common in high heel pain, which usually occurs among women.

Heel pain symptoms may vary, depending on the cause. For example, morning heel pain is usually associated with plantar fasciitis. With Achilles tendonitis, heel pain increases after running or climbing stairs. Gout heel pain may also occur if the inflammation and swelling affect the ankle.

To treat heel pain, you can start by resting the affected foot and avoiding activities that put stress on your heel. Use properly fitted shoes with shoe inserts for heel pain. Natural remedies for heel pain may include chiropractic manipulation and stretching exercises for heel pain. It is an effective and highly recommended method of treating heel pain.
